Abstract Summary

Intervention:Stroke unit
Comparison:General medical ward
Population:Stroke survivors, inpatients, 2 weeks after stroke. N=245.
Main outcomes:Barthel score, length of hospital stay, destination after discharge from hospital
Main results:More younger patients on the stroke unit were discharged home (83% versus 65%) and had higher median Barthel score (17 versus 14) than older patients in stoke unit. Younger patients in general wards had worse outcomes than older patients with similar prognostic expectations (discharge home, 41% versus 61%; median Barthel score, 11 versus 13). Older stroke patients outcomes were similar in both settings although those on stroke unit had shorter median length stay (36 versus 84 days).
